While the police recently caught a gang of copper thieves who had taken nearly 3 km of cable, the press also reported an increase in the theft of catalytic converters from cars.
The modus operandi is well known, the operation is set up by organised gangs, an individual slips under the parked vehicle and detaches the catalytic converter while an accomplice keeps watch. The operation takes a few moments.

Catalysts contain precious metals such as rhodium and palladium. Rhodium, for example, costs €600 per gram, 10 times more than it did two years ago.
Some of these metals are 14 times more expensive than gold: an attractive raw material for criminals and one that mobilises the police to deal with the problem.

For the victimised motorists, the misadventure is rather costly, with the replacement of a catalytic converter costing hundreds of euros.
