Due to the increasing attention to the climate and rising fuel prices, alternative fuels are becoming more and more popular. This applies not only to electric and hybrid vehicles, but also to vehicles with a hydrogen fuel cell. As this technology is relatively new, firefighters must learn how to extinguish a hydrogen fire safely.

KCCE invests in hydrogen fire research - HyResponder training

At the European level, within the framework of the European project 'HyResponder', a training course is being developed to teach first aiders how to handle hydrogen vehicles.  For Belgium, the Knowledge Centre for Civil Security (KCCE) is participating in this project.  In June 2022, a delegation of Belgian fire fighters will follow these courses and will then train their fellow instructors in Belgium according to the train the trainer principle. The teaching material will be adapted to the Belgian fire brigade organisation.  The aim is to provide the first Belgian instructor training by the end of the year so that every fire school has trained personnel in this field.
