Which tree to choose? ... A decision that's not so trivial!

  • The durable tree ... made of wooden slats or metal
  • There's no question about it - the support is not or hardly flammable.
  • Install it on a stable and solid support to avoid any risk of falling
  • It will create a completely different atmosphere.
  • Be careful with decorations! They can catch fire.
Synthetic Christmas trees

  • Check the reaction to fire on the packaging - it is best to choose a synthetic tree that is not easily flammable. This does not mean that it is fireproof! Synthetic materials can burn more or less intensely and produce glowing drops and/or toxic gases.
  • Install your tree securely to avoid any risk of falling.
  • Place your tree at a distance from any heat source.
  • Keep your tree away from easily flammable items such as drapes and curtains. Fire can spread in no time throughout the room.
  • Make sure you can evacuate in an emergency. Do not block the passage to the doors.
  • Be careful with decorations. They can catch fire.
The natural tree

  • Choose a tree with roots and a root ball!
  • Keep the roots moist - water the soil regularly because a dry natural tree will catch fire in a few seconds.
  • Can't believe it? Check out the video "Christmas tree fire; Watered Tree vs Dry tree" from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (US).

Decorations

  • Garlands, baubles, angel hair, etc. are combustible.
  • Prefer LED lighting, which produces less heat. Don't forget to check the quality of the wires, plugs and cables. CE marking is a minimum.
  • Before going out, turn off any string lights.

Never use candles or fireworks on the tree or near combustible items and decorations!

Check that your smoke detector is in good condition!
