From 1 July 2022, it will be compulsory in the Netherlands to have a smoke detector on every habitable floor of a dwelling and in spaces leading to an emergency exit. The Building Decree (Bouwbesluit art 6.211) will be amended accordingly and it will therefore become a legal obligation to comply.

When will smoke detectors become mandatory?

  • From 1 July 2022, smoke detectors will become compulsory.
  • This applies to every floor in every house.
  • Both owner-occupied and rented homes and both existing and new buildings must comply.
  • The obligation also applies to enclosed spaces that serve as escape routes.
