As soon as you arrive at your holiday destination, it has become a spontaneous gesture to connect to the Wi-Fi network of the place where you are staying, at the hotel, the campsite or even the beach.
But beware: hackers are on the lookout for your data! These hackers install "fake" Wi-Fi access points near the holiday destination, which will enable them to monitor your data exchanges and use them for bad purposes, for example by intercepting your e-mails or your passwords on social networks.
What to do?
First of all, avoid connecting to unprotected Wi-Fi networks. If your hotel, holiday club or campsite offers Wi-Fi access, ask for a login and password, even if you have to pay for this service; you should not hesitate, a secure network is always better. Otherwise, it is recommended to use roaming or mobile data rather than a fraudulent Wi-Fi hotspot.
If you still have to use unsecured public Wi-Fi networks, here are some tips:
- avoid checking your bank accounts or making transactions;
- Avoid creating accounts with a password;
- avoid posting your dates of absence (departure and return) on social networks;
- Don't use travel planning applications that locate you and tell would-be burglars where you are;
- also disable geolocation on your applications;
- clean your browser's cache after each use.
Don't hesitate to remind your friends and children of these tips, as they are often more enthusiastic about sharing information on networks.
